Contract researcher in Comparative and European Criminal Law, Department of Criminal Law, Faculty of Law, University of Palermo .

  • PhD in “Comparative and European Criminal Law”. Main institution: University of Palermo ( Italy ). Supporting institution: University of Cambridge ( UK ). Final Thesis on “Criminal agreement and group crimes in the English criminal law. A study focused on the historical origins and the dogmatic and comparative aspects of the offence of conspiracy” (pp.307).

November 2005

  • Awarding of a six months scholarship, as PhD visiting students, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Cambridge (UK). Topic of research: “The offence of Conspiracy in the English criminal Law: juridical and methodological problems”.

March – September 2004

  • S elected among the Top ten Italian students running for the prize “The best year European Law student”, organised by the International legal firm “ Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer”, Milan office.

October 2001

  • First-Class Honours degree ( MSc equivalent) with Distinction in Criminal Law (2001). University of Palermo , Italy (Grade: 110/110 cum Laude. GPA 29/30). Final thesis on: “ European Criminal law and the fight against organised crime” (pp.170).

Academic career

I started working at the Department of Criminal Law as a Junior researcher in November 2001, immediately after my graduation. I became a contract researcher in 2005. Here follows a short summary of my recent academic achievements:

A) Latest national and international academic projects I took part in:

  • Partner of the International Research project “ Cambridge European Sentencing and Early Release Project (CESERP), coordinated by Mrs Nicola Padfield, l ecturer at the Cambridge Institute of Criminology .

  • Partner of the International Research project “ Rethinking the European Criminal Justice”, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Sieber within the Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Strafrecht of Freiburg, Germany, with the support of the Commission of the European Union.
    August 2006 – crurrently

  • Coordinator (and discussant) of the International Research project “ The harmonisation of European Law in Europe: problems of implementation in the English and Italian legal systems ”, directed by Prof. Vincenzo Militello, University of Palermo in collaboration with Prof. J.R. Spencer, University of Cambridge .
    September 2005 – May 2006

  • Coordinator (and lecturer) of a study conference organised by the Department of Criminal Law of the University of Palermo hosting a delegation of researchers from the Law Institute of Lithuania.
    December 2005

  • Tutor at the International Summer School in “ European Cooperation in Penal Matters: Issues and Perspectives”, organised by the I.S.I.S.C. ( International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences) of Siracusa, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law of the University of Palermo and the Faculty of Law of the University of Munich, Germany.
    October 2005

  • Juridical Consultant of the “Fondazione Giovanni e Francesca Falcone” of Palermo for the development and the management of a website (for both Italian and English) related to the United Nations Convention against transnational organised crime. My role consisted in researching and organising material related to the U.N. Convention and its connected topics (trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants, money laundering, corruption, trafficking in weapons and in drugs) and dealing with enquiries via the website. The section has been also enriched with the juridical documents adopted in the above mentioned criminal areas by the European Union, the Council of Europe, the OECD and theG8 ( www.fondazionefalcone.it ).
